EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) - definition

EDGE is the Enhanced version of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) which is also known as EGPRS. It is considered as three (3) times faster than the GPRS signals. EDGE can carry a bandwidth up to 236 kbit/s (with end-to-end latency of less than 150 ms) for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots) in packet mode.
In order to use the EDGE service, device must have EDGE supported on the network unit. A small “E” symbol can be seen when EDGE is activated on a cell phone, it denoted the network data is currently on EDGE mode.
